GMS (P ) HOMEWORK POLICY

 

The school believes that :

 

A good , well-managed homework programme  helps pupils to develop the skills and attitudes they will need for successful lifelong learning. Homework also supports the development of independent learning skills and provides  parents with an opportunity to take part in their children’s education.

 

1. Definition

Homework is the out-of-class tasks that a pupil is assigned as an extension of classroom work ( not necessary written work ). The three main categories of homework are:

Preparatory homework

  Extension assignments

Intended Outcomes

Provides pupils with the opportunities to apply new knowledge , or review , revise and reinforce newly required skills Provides pupils to gain background information on a unit / theme so that they are better prepared  for future lessons

Encourages pupils to problem solve , think creatively and critically 

Types

  • Consolidation exercise e.g. memorisation of times table
  • Practising for mastery e.g. spelling words
  • Revising information about a current topic
  • Composition Writing
  • Background readng
  • Reading of a text for  class discussion
  • Researching  topics for a unit / theme
  • Writing e.g. a book review
  • Project work
  • Making or designing something e.g. an artwork
  • Investigations e.g. Science
  • Researching  .e.g. social studies
  • Information and retrieval skills e.g. using a computer to find material on the Internet

 

Wherever possible, homework should recognise the place of technology in today’s world and the benefits of using technology such as computers, E-mail and the Internet for organising and accessing information. Schools, however, should have regard for equity issues when setting homework that relies upon the use of technology. Students who do not have access to such technology at home should not be  disadvantaged.

2. Purpose of Homework

  • allows for practising, extending and consolidating work done in class
  • provides inputs on pupils’ learning
  • provides training for students in planning and organising time
  • develops a range of skills in identifying and using information resources
  • establishes good work habits which will serve students for the rest of their lives
  • reaffirms the role of parents and caregivers as partners in education
  • challenges and extends high-ability pupils

 

3. GENERAL PRINCIPLES

 

Homework is most beneficial when:

  • it reinforces and extends class work and consolidates basic skills and knowledge
  • it is challenging and purposeful, but not so demanding that it has adverse effects on the

             student’s motivation

  • pupils  take responsibility for their homework, supported by their parents or caregivers
  • it is well coordinated and teacher expectations are well communicated
  • it is set on a regular basis and establishes a routine of home study
  • teachers set suitable amounts of homework which are varied and at an appropriate

level considering the age, level  and abilities of pupils

  • it is marked promptly and accurately
  • feedback and follow-up are provided regularly to students

 

4. GUIDELINES

The school seeks to ensure pupils’ wellness by not overloading pupils with homework assignments , thus It adopts the following guidelines to manage the workload of pupils.

 

(a)     The school and teachers have worked out an estimated amount of time that pupils would spend to complete their homework assignments daily.

1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes

1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes

1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours

P6

1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours

 

  • In addition, pupils who are not able to finish the work set in class will also need to complete it at home.
  • On days that have remedial classes ( P3 and P4 ) ,  supplementary classes ( P5 and P6 )  / targetted remedial ( P6 ) and other activities such as sports practice,  teachers should assigned  homework  ( half the time of the estimated time spent on homework ) .
  • English and Mother Tongue should be conducted on different days. If there is a public or school holiday, spelling will be postponed to the next school day.

 

* For CAs and SAs,  assigning of revision papers should be coordinated among teachers teaching the

  class and reasonable deadlines should be set for the completion

 

 

(b) During the school holidays and the PSLE Marking Exercise, homework assignments will be issued. The school and teachers have worked out an estimated amount of time that pupils would spend on each subject during the duration.
